AFGHANISTAN. – Whilst the world is reeling under the pressure of COVID-19, a horrific attack on a maternity ward in Kabul, left 18 babies without mothers.

The New York Times reports the hospital was evacuated after the mothers of these babies were slaughtered right next to them. A gunman stormed the maternity ward and killed the mothers at random. Many of these babies were splattered with blood and now has to reunited with their families.

The attack came amidst a war that has stretched more than four decades and it is believed the attack came over a prisoner exchange. Dozens of people are being killed here daily. No one has taken responsibility for the attack on the maternity ward as yet.

Due to the spread of COVID-19, these mothers were not allowed to have anyone by their sides. Even husbands were refused to visit their wives.

It has been a harrowing task to identify the babies. They were not yet named and the authorities struggled to reconnect them with their families. Babies were only handed over to men, so sisters and mothers of the slaughted women were not allowed to take the babies home.
