Ministers of education meet on Monday to discuss reopening of schools

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga plans to meet with all the provincial ministers of education this coming Monday to discuss the reopening of schools.

Her department says in a statement that consensus has been reached at a meeting last Monday that certain provinces need more time to prepare for reopening.

“At Monday’s meeting, we decided that one week would be enough to finalise matters. We shall meet again on Monday, May 18, after which we shall inform the public about the schools’ state of readiness,” Motshekga says.

“We have done a lot of work and are satisfied with the progress we have made so far. We still need to be informed about material which is due to be delivered to certain provinces, though.”

Mathanzima Mweli, director-general of the department of basic education, says the President’s message to the nation yesterday will play a role in the implementing of the department’s approach towards the reopening of schools. He says the education sector is based on three principles – to save lives, to save the academic year, and to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the plan.
