Five men arrested for counterfeit goods
Five men between 22 and 42 years old were arrested in Kuruman for counterfeit goods and for contravention of the Disaster Management Act.
The five suspects were arrested on 14 May at about 11:45 after sgt Jan Burger and sgt Aldine Chadinha stationed at Kuruman highway patrol, received a tip-off from a member of the public about cigarettes being loaded unto a truck in Kuruman industrial before being transported to Upington.
The two officials acted on the information and discovered that boxes of cigarettes together with nappies and packets of NCP high superbrew yeast were being loaded onto a truck.
The cigarettes, estimated to the value of R16 125 000, yeast to the value of R158 800 and the truck were confiscated.
The five male suspects will appear before the Kuruman magistrate’s court on Friday 15 May on charges of counterfeit goods and contravention of the Disaster Management Act.
The cluster commander of JTG, major general Johan Bean, commended sergeants Burger and Chadinha for their dedication and commitment. General Bean also urged community members to keep on reporting illegal activities to the police.
