Sol Plaatje Municipality did not pay – Eskom
“Eskom has no choice but to proceed with its credit management processes to limit the financial risk created by the non-payment of the municipality’s bills. This may include termination of the supply agreement by the interruption of the electricity supply to the Sol Plaatje Municipality.”
KIMBERLEY. – If the Sol Plaatje Municipality does not pay it’s Eskom bill fast, this municipality may be without electricity.
The municipality failed to pay its December 2020 account, even though it entered into a payment agreement with the municipality in good faith to cover its arrear debt. “Eskom has since been informed the municipality cannot meet its obligation to pay the December 2020 bill. The municipality has cited cash flow challenges that have resulted in it contravening its payment agreement with Eskom,” states the letter.
This is according to a letter from the electricity supplier, Eskom, addressed to dr. Zamani Saul, premier of the Northern Cape.

Eskom further says the non-payment of the Eskom services rendered to the Sol Plaatje Municipality poses an increasing financial risk to Eskom. “Eskom has no choice but to proceed with its credit management processes to limit the financial risk created by the non-payment of the municipality’s bills. This may include termination of the supply agreement by the interruption of the electricity supply to the Sol Plaatje Municipality.”
It calls on Saul to intervene urgently to ensure payment of the outstanding amounts that are duet o Eskom.
The letter is dated 5 February, 2021 and signed by Marion Hughes, general manager: Northern Cape Operating Unit of Eskom.
*Sol Plaatje Municipality has some of the highest electricity tariffs in South Africa.
