The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality will be making a formal submission to Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa, that opposes Port Elizabeth’s name change to Gqeberha.
The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality will be making a formal submission to Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa, that opposes Port Elizabeth’s name change to Gqeberha.
Submission
In a town hall meeting on Monday, mayor Nqaba Bhanga said that the submission would also object to Uithenhage’s name being changed to Kariega. Bhanga said that the name changes received more than 66 000 complaints and the submission will argue that the changes didn’t receive a satisfactory public participation process, as less than 400 people attended the public participation meetings.
Name change
The submission does not object to the idea of a name change, stating instead that it might be better to change the name to “Nelson Mandela City”- both for tourism purposes and because of the historical significance of the former president to the area.
