According to Facebook, the leak of 533 million users’ data on an online hacking forum wasn’t actually a hack- or at least not a new one.

On Saturday, it was reported that 533 million Facebook users’ personal details, including their names, email addresses and phone numbers, had been posted on a low-level hacking forum.

Facebook didn’t report the incident because according to them, the data wasn’t acquired by someone hacking into its systems. Instead it had been scraped off the platform sometime before September 2019.

Due to the information allegedly being acquired before they fixed the vulnerability that allowed it to be retrieved, they were not obligated to inform anyone about a new breach.
