According to the police chief, the fatal shooting of a black man by a police officer in Minnesota was an accident.

Chief Tim Gannon told reporters that Daunte Wright, 20, was shot after the officer meant to use a Taser but mistakenly drew her gun instead. The officer was later identified as Kim Potter, who has worked for the Brooklyn Center Police for 26 years.

Mr Wright’s death sparked many protests in which fireworks and bottles were thrown at police, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

Daunte Wright was pulled over on Sunday for a traffic violation, but there was a struggle when he tried to get back into his car while they were attempting to handcuff him.

The officer allegedly tried to Taser him but had mistakenly pulled out her gun instead.

Mr Wright had managed to get back into his car, but fatally wounded he crashed a few streets away.
