More than 500 firefighters in the Western Cape could lose their jobs

When the alarm that signalled the devastating blaze on Table Mountain, the firefighters who are in a protracted battle with the City and facing possible dismissal were ready to serve.

One firefighter, who can’t be named for fear of reprisal, said that he was among one of the first crew who arrived on scene to try to contain the spread of the wildfire. The man has been a firefighter for over 30 years and when he received the call, he was off-duty.
More than 500 firefighters in the Western Cape could lose their jobs after disciplinary procedures were instituted earlier this month, two years after a dispute over working hours.
