According to health experts in South Africa, stricter lockdown regulations should be introduced to avoid the impact of new Covid-19 variants and a severe third wave of infections.
Lockdown level
Dr. Asmal Dasoo, convener of the Progressive Health Forum, said that South Africa should move to a higher lockdown level to limit gatherings to 10 people and that healthcare workers should be prepared for an influx of new Covid cases.
On Thursday, 7 May, Health minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize stated that government can facilitate and intervene, however it would rather concentrate on economic recovery rather than imposing further restrictions. “Therefore every citizen must adhere to the non-pharmaceutical interventions if we are to avoid further restrictions,” he said.
He also added that the National Coronavirus Command Council are deliberating on the issue of border control and final decisions will be communicated accordingly.
